pharmacological properties

Pharmacotherapeutic group : Pest control for external use.
ATC vet code : QP53AX15 .
Pharmacodynamic properties
Fipronil is an insecticide acaricide belonging to the family of phenylpyrazoles . It works by inhibiting the GABA complex , thereby blocking the transfer of chloride ions across the membrane at the pre- and postsynaptic by binding in the chlorine channel . It thus causing uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system and death of insects and mites.
pharmacokinetic characteristics
After application, it establishes on the animal's coat a concentration gradient of fipronil ( translocation ) from the point of application to outlying areas ( lumbar region , flanks, ... ) . Over time , the concentration of fipronil in the bristles are descending to an average concentration of about 3-4 g / g of hair , 56 days after treatment. This extended fipronil on the hair persistence is explained by the accumulation of fipronil in the sebaceous glands and progressive release together with the sebum.
In dogs, the transcutaneous passage of fipronil is low.
Fipronil is metabolized to its sulfone derivative.
