Mainly from the Kalahari Desert and the steppes of Namibia, devil's claw - also called harpagophytum - is now known to relieve arthritis pain.
Its name comes from the fact that its fruit has claws that cling to the hairs and skin of living beings that rub against it. Harpagophytum means "vegetable harpoon".
Indigenous peoples in southern Africa have used harpagophytum for a long time to relieve many ailments. The first Western descriptions of the plant date from 1820, but it was not until 1907 that a German discovered its medicinal properties in the West. It is now used mainly to relieve joint pain.
What are the properties of harpagophytum?
If harpagophytum is commonly used to fight arthritis pain, many studies have been carried out, especially in Europe, to verify its effectiveness.
Three trials indicate that the plant helps reduce pain caused by osteoarthritis.
Another 8-week trial of 259 people with arthritis and rheumatic pain found that a devil's claw extract (960 mg) helps reduce pain and improve mobility3.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the use of harpagophytum in the treatment of pain associated with rheumatism.
What are the benefits of vitamin C?
Vitamin C is water-soluble, most mammals can synthesize it, but the human body has lost its capacity as it evolves. So we have to get it from food every day.
Vitamin C is involved in a multitude of processes in the body. One of its main functions is to help the body produce collagen, a protein essential for the formation of connective tissue in the skin, ligaments and bones4. This is why vitamin C is often used in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) recognizes that vitamin C contributes to the normal formation of cartilage. Cartilage is present in the joints, but also in the nose, ears and windpipe. Vitamin C therefore contributes to the formation of collagen, to preserve the health of these tissues.
What are the properties of vitamins B9 and B12?
Vitamin B9, also called folic acid, contributes to the production of genetic material (DNA and RNA) and amino acids necessary for cell growth. It plays a role in particular in the formation of red blood cells, the functioning of the nervous system and the immune system. It helps in the production of new cells, especially during periods of rapid growth.
Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is useful for the growth and proper functioning of the cells of our body. It ensures the balance of our nervous system, the production of the genetic material of our cells and our red blood cells.
