What is menstrual cup?
The menstrual cup was invented in the 1930s, but its popularity has grown only in recent years.
As the menstrual cup will last in use for several years, it is a very economical and environmentally friendly alternative. Several menstrual cup users swear by it and find it the most pleasant menstrual cover on the market today.
Menstrual cup ("cup") is a sustainable menstrual cover that is inserted in the vagina, and which collects menstrual bleeding. The menstrual cup is emptied and washed when necessary and inserted back in the vagina.Between menstruations, the cup is disinfected (by boiling) and stored in a small cloth pouch. When the menstrual cup is used, cleaned and maintained properly, it is a safe and clean cover, which can be used for several years.
The menstrual cup is not a similar menstrual cover as a tampon. This is why the tampon averse may get a new and pleasant menstrual cover out of the menstrual cup.
The menstrual cup also doesn't absorb anything, but instead collects the fluid. Therefore the vaginal mucous membranes will not dry during use, and the vaginal moisture balance will be preserved. The menstrual cup also does not interfere with the natural vaginal way in removing dead cells and bacteria with the menstrual fluid. Women who suffer from recurrent yeast infections may benefit from the use of the menstrual cup, as often just the use of the cup instead of a disposable sanitary pads will reduce yeast infections.
How does menstrual cup work?
Depending on the brand, the menstrual cup is either made of medical silicone or natural rubber, i.e. latex. The advantages of a silicone made cup are that it is non-allergenic and it is easy to disinfect by boiling. There is an antenna at the bottom of the bell shaped menstrual cup, which helps to get a grip of the cup when removing it from the vagina. The menstrual cup is inserted in the vagina by squeezing it flat (there are several ways to insert the cup and clear instructions will be provided with Inticup). The menstrual cup is not inserted deep into the vagina, but left in the lower part of the vagina. The cup is held in place by the vacuum formed inside the cup and by the vaginal muscles. The vacuum is sufficient to keep the cup edges firmly against the walls of the vagina. When the cup is removed, it is compressed to the extent that air gets inside the cup, so that the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the cup is stabilized and the cup detaches from the faces of the vagina.
Often at the beginning the users of the menstrual cup wonder how to know when the cup should be emptied. The emptying need depends on the amount of bleeding, and the suitable emptying frequency is usually learned pretty quickly, but to be emptied preferably twice a day.
How to use Inticup
It is recommended to wash the menstrual cup every time before use and after each emptying with mild soap water. The cup should be boiled for 3 to 5 minutes before first use as well as after each monthly period. The menstrual cup is kept in a cloth bag in a dry place and protected from sunlight.
